Sony’s PS5 is a game changer

First released in 2020, Sony PlayStation 5 was all set to be the greatest game console ever.

But then the pandemic hit and there were supply issues.

Those issues are now thankfully in the past, and it cleared the way for PS5 to have a meteoric year in 2023, outselling Microsoft’s Xbox by almost three to one.

PS5 is indeed a game-changer. Not only does it offer 4K gaming, but PS5 also has seriously advanced haptics, a speedy SSD and immersive 3D audio. All of these and more combine to deliver a console that's truly equipped for next-generation, or now current-generation, gaming.

“Everything about the PS5 screams next-gen. From its outlandish but sleek design, comfortable DualSense controller, and stellar 4K graphics, the PS5 is a major upgrade over the PS4. Thanks to far more readily available stock, too, it is now the right time to buy a PS5.” (radiotimes.com)

“Experience lightning-fast loading with an ultra-high-speed SSD, deeper immersion with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and 3D Audio, and an all-new generation of incredible PlayStation games.” (Sony)

Haptics

Haptic technology is technology that can create an experience of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user. These technologies can be used to create virtual objects in a computer simulation, to control virtual objects, and to enhance remote control of machines and devices. [i]

4K resolution and HDR

According to Sony: “4K is almost four times higher definition than standard (1080p HD). Though all PS5 consoles have 4K and HDR capabilities, the availability of image quality depends on your home entertainment setup.”

What they are saying is that your TV or monitor will also need 4K/HDR capability. HDR is an acronym for high dynamic range as opposed to SDR (standard

The increased colour range and brightness compared to SDR games gives you a more detailed and immersive gaming experience.

The end result is an amazing gaming experience. With vivid brightness, inky blacks, and swarms of colors, an HDR gaming monitor can push the visuals of games further that any SDR monitor.

3D audio

3D audio gives you immersive surround sound that makes you feel like you're inside the game.

3D audio effects are a group of sound effects that manipulate the sound produced by stereo speakers, surround-sound speakers, speaker-arrays, or headphones. This frequently involves the virtual placement of sound sources anywhere in three-dimensional space, including behind, above or below the listener.

What PS5 offers

There are two different PS5 models to choose from. If you are buying local be sure you know the difference!

There is a digital-only PS5 which is cheaper, but that means you won’t be able to play any game off a disc – you will need to buy and download games on-line.

The other option is the standard disc-drive, where you buy the game as a disc – the console is more expensive but probably more practical.

Next-gen games

Sony has backed up the PS5 console with next-level games designed specifically for PS5, adding to its current meteoric popularity.

“Heavy hitters such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the Dead Space remake, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and Sony’s own Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are all releasing on PS5 and not on PS4. These games join the likes of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Need for Speed Unbound, and Gotham Knights in being current-gen-only releases. If you don’t want to miss out on the latest games, you will need to upgrade to the PS5.” (radiotimes.com)
