Welcome to the virtual classroom

Our previous blog looked at distance learning as a viable option for students.

Distance learning is delivered through a platform called a 'virtual classroom'.

A virtual classroom includes the following features:

  • video conferencing: using the best web conferencing software to facilitate learner-teacher-learner communication;
  • digital whiteboards: offering real-time demonstrations and diagrams;
  • instant messaging: allowing typed conversations on lower bandwidths;
  • participation controls: enabling students to participate in discussions, mute their surroundings or virtually ‘raise their hands’;
  • sub-chats: breakout rooms to facilitate collaboration between learners;
  • video recording and downloading: to save live lectures as video-on-demand for later reference;
  • end-to-end encryption: to ensure virtual classroom access is restricted to authorized learners.

Virtual teaching tools exist in PNG - right here, right now!

Not only does distance learning provide opportunities for students, but it also opens up new avenues for teachers.

There is currently a cloud-based SaaS virtual classroom solution available right here, right now in Papua New Guinea.

Software as a service (SaaS) allows users to connect to and use cloud-based apps over the Internet. Common examples are email, calendaring, and office tools (such as Microsoft Office 365). SaaS provides a complete software solution that you purchase on a pay-as-you-go basis from a cloud service provider.

This platform transforms every traditional classroom of schools, colleges, or universities into a boundary-less virtual space where students and teachers can interact in a face-to-face real-life session very easily. It can be deployed, and managed effortlessly, even with minimal IT support.

Video conferencing makes the virtual classroom more engaging and helps students and teachers to be more productive.

It works on a WebRTC platform with AES encryption which ensures highest reliability and security, with the following features:

  • state-of-the-art Learning Management Suite;
  • ability to conduct Virtual Counselling;
  • Lecture Capture for On-Demand Learning needs;
  • attendance management;
  • online examination and evaluation.

Virtual classroom technology

Among the range of classroom products now available in Papua New Guinea are tracking cameras, microphones and virtual classroom/meeting configurations. Top of the list is the ePodium Delta Plus/Ultra/Elite.

ePodium Delta Plus/Ultra/Elite

This is a podium with a PC, audio, and control system integrated into it.

It allows the teacher/lecturer to manage every aspect of their presentation from one place, including controlling the projector, projecting content, annotating on the content, and managing the ambient light or temperature.
