Synopsis

In November 2017, author Glenn Armstrong and photographer Rocky Roe were invited to visit the Hargy Oil Palm plantations and operations located in a remote region of West New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea.

Their task was to document and record a 'snapshot' of the company on the eve of its 40th anniversary - to capture the experience of being part of the vast expanse that is Hargy Oil Palms - the geography, industry and humanity.

In these parts, at the foot of Mount Ulawun, one of Papua New Guinea's most active volcanoes, tenacity makes the difference between failure and success.

The book, first published as a hardcover in 2018, contains first-hand accounts of Hargy's 40 year history - stories of hope, hardship and success.

The latest eBook release includes an update on the past five years since the hardcover was first published – five years which have proven just as challenging as the previous forty.

Hope, hardship and success breeds resilience and, to use a cliché, it becomes a triumph over adversity.

Without having been tested by hardship, we can never know the true meaning of hope and success.

This is not a matter of luck. Hargy’s success has been achieved through sound leadership, effective management and a general willingness to succeed.

Ricky Mitio's book for the ages

In this year of Papua New Guinea's 50th anniversary of Independence, there is no person more qualified to reflect on the highs and lows than Ricky Mitio. I hope you enjoy reading this autobiography of a man who is the son of a tribal warrior born in the Stone Age who later became a pioneer evangelist of the Lutheran Church despite being completely illiterate. BSP’s controversial new logo may well be an indication that the bank, which has outgrown Papua New Guinea, has plans to spread its wings further throughout the Pacific. Bank South Pacific currently operates in the Cook Islands, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga, and Vanuatu, alongside its historical home base in Papua New Guinea. But is an entry into New Zealand now on the cards? The new BSP logo bears some resemblance to that of New Zealand’s national airline. It’s as if the brief was, “We want something similar to that of Air New Zealand.” In November 2023, the Prime Minister of Samoa, Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa, made a bold suggestion that BSP should consider opening branches in Australia and New Zealand to 'service the Pacific diaspora', teasing the prospect of future expansion of the bank.
