S23 FE. One for the fans.

Earlier this year Samsung released the new Galaxy S23 line up. This included the base model Galaxy S23, S23 Plus and S23 Ultra.

Just recently, Samsung also released the S23 FE – announced on October 3 and available on October 26.

Much to their credit, local retailer Fone Haus got the scoop on the product, offering it for sale in Papua New Guinea the following day on October 27 at K2899 (8GB/256GB) with free Wireless Galaxy Buds FE.

Not a bad deal, and not a bad phone.


Why the hype?

FE stands for Fan Edition. It's a special edition of the S23 that gives access to the latest S series at a more affordable price, given that the base model S23 retails at around K3800.

S23 FE is also a step up from the A Series A54 which retails at around K1700-K1800.

In short, the S23 FE is for fans who want in on the S Series at the lower price of K2899.

So, what’s different?

Aesthetically, the S23 FE looks the same as the S23.

The FE does use cheaper materials, such as Gorilla Glass 5 instead of the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the S23.

Water resistance is the same IP68 rating as the S23, and a step above the IP67 rating of the Galaxy A54.

The colour range is different with the option of more zesty mint, purple, cream and graphite on the S23FE, in contrast to the more hushed tones of phantom black, green, cream and lavender of the S23.

The back of the S23 FE is similar to the S23 with a vertical camera arrangement, although the lenses are more prominent, and more similar to the A54.

The display of the S23 FE is 6.4 inches making it taller and wider than the base model S23 6.1 inches, so it is also heavier.

Buyers (fans) of the S23 FE won’t be disappointed in the camera. It’s the same as the S23 – 50MP main camera and 12MP ultrawide lens. The telephoto 8MP lens is a slight step down from the S23’s 10MP, but it still has a 3x optical zoom. Selfie camera is 10MP versus the S23’s 12MP.

Battery size is 4,500 mAH with fast charging speed of 25W and supports wireless charging.

WW2 plane found in Madang

The wreckage of a plane named ‘Marge’ belonging to famous US WW2 air ace Richard Bong has been found in Madang, 80 years after it went missing. Major Richard Bong is credited with shooting down 40 Japanese aircraft during World War II. He famously plastered a blow-up of his girlfriend Marge Vattendahl’s portrait on the nose of his Lockheed ‘Lightning’ P-38 fighter plane, as shown in our main photo. During WW2, Bong shot down more planes than any other American pilot. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the U.S. military’s highest decoration, by Gen. Douglas MacArthur in 1944. But Bong wasn’t at the yoke when his plane went down. Another pilot, Thomas Malone was flying Bong’s plane in March 1944 when it encountered engine failure over Madang, forcing Malone to bail out before the plane crashed in the jungle. Ricky Mitio's book for the ages

In this year of Papua New Guinea's 50th anniversary of Independence, there is no person more qualified to reflect on the highs and lows than Ricky Mitio. I hope you enjoy reading this autobiography of a man who is the son of a tribal warrior born in the Stone Age who later became a pioneer evangelist of the Lutheran Church despite being completely illiterate. Ricky Mitio was among the first people in the country to be educated, learn a foreign language, work for this new means of exchange called money, travel to all districts of the country, and explore five continents of the world.  Ricky Mitio’s name is synonymous with the coffee industry in PNG.
