Fitness and wellness apps
Fitness apps are applications you can download on your mobile device for assistance with your exercise routine and related lifestyle behaviours. They can help you set fitness goals, track your progress toward those goals, try new workouts, access expert fitness advice, join a supportive community, stay motivated and more.
Fitness
apps are generally safe to use, but if you’re new to exercise or considering
starting a new program on a fitness app, consult with your doctor first to
ensure the plan you’re considering is a safe option for you. Always exercise
caution and start slowly when attempting a new type of workout in an
unsupervised format to prevent unwanted strains, pains and injuries.
In other
words – don’t overdo it! You want exercise to be a pleasure not a chore. We are
designed to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and enjoy all things in
moderation.
Samsung Health: a fitness app
The most
common example of a fitness app is one you may already have on your mobile
phone. I’m talking about Samsung Health.
Samsung Health is a free app. If you don’t already have it and own
an android phone, then it is only a free download away via Google Play. You can
even use it on an iPhone by downloading the app via the App Store.
It can also
sync with your smartwatch, so when you get into it you will appreciate the
feedback being given to you by your personal technology. You can manage the app
so it gives you information suited to your lifestyle, and so it does not become
intrusive.
The
technology is for your personal use, so no need to become a slave to it.
Samsung Health isn’t the most in-depth or complex health monitoring app on the
market and dedicated sporting professionals may find more useful data
elsewhere. However, for the vast majority of users, it provides an easy
way to digest your data and maintain a somewhat healthy lifestyle.
In other
words – it’s the best place to start and probably all you will ever need.
Samsung Health allows you to track health, track exercise, analyse activity over
time through handy charts and set daily goals.
You can
also monitor sleep, diet and water intake.
The second
type of tracking you might want to consider is exercise tracking. Samsung
Health can track all the big activities, such as running, walking,
biking, swimming, etc. It goes well beyond the common activities, though… even
into gym workouts.
This is some data from my 5am morning walk – to give you an idea of what a basic activity looks like on Samsung Health. It also shows the daily overview.
You will
also see I had a short break at the half-way mark – I stopped for a few minutes
to do some stretches. This would have also had a negative effect on my average speed.
For the day I achieved 12,440 steps – which is way over my target of 6,000 steps per day.
Beurer HealthManager is probably the best example of
an impressive, fully-dedicated wellness app.
For those
unfamiliar with the name, Beurer is a world-leading manufacturer of
electrical devices for health and well-being, as well as the medical
profession, founded in Germany in 1919.
Launched in
November 2021, Beurer HealthManager is a free health
monitoring system that allows users to conveniently access their health data on
their smartphones anytime and anywhere. The app offers six product areas,
including weight, blood pressure, blood glucose, activity, sleep, and pulse
oximeter sections. Users can switch easily between these sections and view
their health data in progress graphics, tables with measured values, and a
practical diary function.
The app also offers secure health data storage through the TÜV certified HealthManager Cloud and the option to link medication and health data.
The free app
is available via Google Play or the App Store.
If you have
a medical or family history of blood pressure, blood glucose and weight issues,
then this app is definitely for you, allowing you to monitor your readings and
share them with your doctor.
The app
relies on input from affordable Beurer devices. Check the app for compatible devices.
